Getting started with TabHue in 5 minutes
Install TabHue, watch your tabs sort themselves into colour-coded groups, and learn the few controls that make the biggest difference.
TabHue is a Chrome extension that sorts your tabs into colour-coded tab groups automatically, protects your focus by parking distracting sites, and shows where your browsing time goes. Getting started takes about five minutes: install it, pin it to your toolbar, browse as usual and watch your tabs organize themselves, then learn three controls: moving a tab, Focus mode and the Today bar.
Minute 1: install and pin
- Add TabHue from the Chrome Web Store.
- Click the puzzle piece at the top right of Chrome, then the pin next to TabHue so its icon stays in your toolbar.
No account, no sign-up. TabHue works straight away.
Minute 2: watch your tabs sort themselves
TabHue starts with three categories: Social, Work and Learning. Open a few sites you use every day. Each tab joins the right coloured group in your tab strip, and each group's name shows how many tabs it holds, like Work (3). University and school websites join Learning automatically.
TabHue only manages the groups it creates. Any tab group you make yourself is left alone.
Minute 3: move a tab
Some sites could go either way. To move one:
- click the TabHue icon (or press Alt+Shift+T), then click the category next to the current tab and pick another, or
- right-click the page and choose Assign to Category.
TabHue remembers your choice, even after Chrome restarts. More in Categories and website rules.
Minute 4: try Focus mode
Turn on Focus mode in TabHue, or press Alt+Shift+F. Your distracting categories (Social, to start) are parked: their tabs close and are saved. Turn it off and they reopen exactly as they were. Pinned tabs are never parked. See Focus mode and parking.
Minute 5: look at Today
The Today bar shows how your browsing time splits across categories. It only counts while you're actually browsing and pauses when you step away. Totals stay in your browser. See Insights and time tracking.
Three shortcuts worth learning
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Alt+Shift+F | Focus mode on or off |
| Alt+Shift+C | Collapse every group except the current one |
| Alt+Shift+D | Close duplicate tabs |
On a Mac, use Option instead of Alt.
Where to go next
- Learn the thinking behind the default categories: the three-group method.
- With Pro, create your own categories and website rules; see your first custom category.
Frequently asked questions
Is TabHue free?
Yes. The free version sorts your tabs, includes Focus mode, parking and the Today bar. TabHue Pro adds your own categories and rules, smart parking, dimming and sync.
Does TabHue see my browsing?
It reads your tabs' addresses inside your browser to sort them. That information never leaves your device, and there's no account. See Privacy questions.
How do I pause TabHue?
Use the switch at the top of TabHue. It removes the groups it made and stops sorting until you switch it back on.
